Joaquín Navajas holds a PhD in Psychology (UAB) and is a senior scientist at CIEMAT's Sociotechnical Research Centre. He leads projects focused on safety, security and risk from a systemic and multidisciplinary perspective in the context of high reliability systems (nuclear power plants, radioactive waste, nuclear fuel supply, hydrogen refuelling stations) or focused on knowledge generation (R&D institutions, regulatory body). He has participated in all independent safety culture assessments of the Spanish nuclear sector since 2003 and has been leading them since 2018.
In his projects he tries to combine mixed methodological approaches, through the application of quantitative and qualitative techniques, and the participation of multidisciplinary scientific disciplines with the aim of obtaining a rigorous knowledge of complex high-risk systems. He has published some of his studies in scientific journals such as Safety Science, Journal of Safety Research, Progress in Nuclear Energy or Applied Science.
